Computer Use

Approved April 28, 2008
Amended January 27, 2011
Amended January 24, 2013

Worth County Library System provides computers and Internet access in accordance with its mission statement to provide current, high-demand, high-interest materials in a variety of formats for persons of all ages, utilizing the latest information technologies. All users are expected to use this privilege and these resources within legal limits and for ethical purposes.

The Internet is a global information network containing a wide variety of material and opinions from diverse points of view utilizing text, graphics, and sound. It is a valuable resource for educational, informational, and recreational material. The Internet is in a constant state of change. Not all information available is current, accurate, or complete. If information cannot be found, consult the Director for other possible Library resources. The Internet is accessed by a wide and varied population and is largely immoderate and uncensored. Although the Library allows access to any information that might be found on the Internet, there are restrictions on access to the Internet through filtering. In all cases, however, parents or guardians of children under 17 must assume responsibility for their children’s use of the Internet.

Responsible, ethical, and legal use of this resource is expected. Appropriate use includes respect for the rights and property of others. These guidelines should be followed:

  1. Computers are available for public use at the beginning of the workday and are shut down fifteen (15) minutes before the library closes.
  2. A patron must present his/her PINES card at the circulation desk to sign up to use a computer. A non-PINES patron may be signed in as a visitor. Use of a computer is on a “first come, first served” basis. One person is allowed at each computer station. The exception is in the case of children when the child may be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or sibling (16 years of older). Anyone owing more than $3 in fines may not use the computer until fines are paid.
  3. There is a 2 hour time limit for using all computers. Additional time may be allowed at the discretion of staff.
  4. A patron may print from a computer at a cost of $.25 per page. Patrons are obligated to pay for all pages printed.
  5. All computers are utilizing the Smart Filter program provided by GPLS. An adult user may request to disable the filter. Parents or guardians, not the library staff, are responsible for Internet information accessed by their children. The library cannot be held responsible for information accessed. Patrons use the Internet at their own risk.
  6. A patron may not send, receive, or display text, graphics, or sounds that may be reasonably offensive to others. Misuse of a computer, printer, or Internet access will result in the loss of a patron’s computer privileges. Examples include: changing screen settings, visiting inappropriate sites, performing any illegal Public Services 2 activity, or physical abuse of equipment. If a patron is under 17, notification will be mailed to the parent or guardian.

The library provides an internet access point for users with portable computers capable of receiving wireless signals. This access point will allow users to access the internet from their laptop computers when sitting within range of the access point. Library staff will provide general information on the settings necessary to access the internet via this connection. Printing is not available using the wireless connection. As part of the library’s network, the wireless connection falls under the filtering system implemented by GPLS.
